State-owned National Power Corp. recently inaugurated four 600-kilowatt generating sets to augment the power needs in the towns of San Vicente and El Nido in Palawan to respond to the areas’ growing power demand.

“As premiere destination among local and foreign tourists, there is a significant increase in power demand in these areas every year,” said Napocor president Pio Benavidez in a statement.

Napocor, which is mandated under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 to provide electrification to the Small Power Utilities Group or missionary areas, said the two open type generating sets of the San Vicente diesel power plant would bring the total dependable capacity to 1,940 kW, or enough to address the peak demand of 676 kW.

The El Nido diesel power plant, meanwhile, will now have 4,050 kW of total dependable capacity, which is sufficient to supply the 3,825 kW demand.

Both power plants operate at 24 hours and serve around 4,500 families and 500 commercial establishments.
