Napocor taps Japan technology

State-owned National Power Corp.  signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese company Challenergy to deploy Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine technology in remote areas.

“If proven feasible after testing, NPC believes that the technology can help reduce its missionary power plants’ dependence on diesel fuel,” Napocor said in a statement.

The technology was invented by Challengery president Atsushi Shimizu.

“This will also be more advantageous to the islands since they are often hit by typhoons or suffer from inclement weather conditions,” Napocor said.

The Challenergy team is set to visit NPC plants in Palumbanes in Catanduanes and Naro in Masbate.

Napocor has been eyeing renewable energy hybrid systems in its missionary electrification program to lower the subsidy rates of the Small Power Utilities Group plants in the country.

The company earlier conducted capacity development training on renewable energy in partnership with the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan focusing on solar PV-Diesel Hybrid System.
