Globe wants to build more cell sites to cut energy usage

Globe Telecom Inc. wants to build more cell sites nationwide in a bid to further reduce its annual energy consumption.

“The more dense cell sites we have, the less power these cell sites consume. This is a message we want to convey to our public sector. Allow us to build more cell sites so we can effectively manage our energy consumption,” said Globe chief technology and information officer Gil Genio during the company’s PowerSummit.

“I know site density is a hard problem to solve, it is not entirely within our control, but [we are asking] our government to allow us  to build more sites faster to the same degree as Vietnam that has 75,000 sites already versus our barely 23,000 as a country and overall power consumption of both operators and consumers will actually come down,” he added.

Globe is consuming 360 megawatt hours of electricity equivalent to P3.5 billion to power its network every year.

Globe’s network is consuming nine million liters amounting to P348 million of diesel fuel annually for the past three years.

The company also said it almost doubled the deployment of green network solutions to 6,314 in 2018 from just 3,350 in 2017.

Globe said the use of green network solutions, like fuel cell system and lithium ion batteries, were aimed at minimizing carbon emissions, especially as Globe continues to widen its network footprint in the country.

In addition, Globe has been utilizing remote management systems to proactively monitor and manage energy and diesel fuel consumption of remote sites. It has also deployed free-cooling solutions to lessen dependence on power-hungry air conditioning units.

Globe saw its reduced greenhouse gas emissions go up to 503.14 tons in 2018 from 482 tons in 2017.

The company has developed an employee ride-sharing strategy that has so far reduced the company’s carbon emissions by at least 584 metric tons, or equivalent to planting 4,133 trees.

Globe in 2018 introduced a mobile web-based solution called Loop, which provides a convenient way for employees to avail of the company’s free shuttle service.
