The government is reviewing the spectrum users fees to certain frequency bands that were assigned to Smart Communications Inc., Globe Telecom Inc., and other telecommunications companies.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology ordered the National Telecommunications Commission to “review and make appropriate adjustment on the SUF for 610-790 megahertz (MHz) and 1710-2025 Mhz International Mobil Telecommunications bands of frequencies.

“Due to the rapid growth of 3G and 4G mobile as well as the global trend towards 5G, it has become necessary for the DICT to encourage and promote the use of currently allocated frequencies such that spectrum users fees shall be applied uniformly and without discrimination to all users under the same classification or category,” DICT said.

Acting DICT Secretary Eliseo Rio said the idea was to reward the efficient use of spectrum awarded to a telco, which would be a function of the actual traffic using the spectrum.
