The Philippines may start exporting bananas and shallots shortly to Indonesia after a meeting Monday with visiting Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita.

The prospective export was one of the early gains of the Philippines during the meeting in Manila hosted by Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez and Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol.

Both sides stressed the importance of opening up each other’s market, while highlighting the decades-long relations between Indonesia and the Philippines.

Indonesia committed to remove an anti-dumping measure against Philippine bananas and acknowledged Davao Region, Northern Mindanao, and SOCCSKSARGEN as pest-free areas for banana production.

The trade partner also recognized Nueva Ecija, Ilocos and Mindoro as pest-free for shallot or onion production.

The development is considered a breakthrough in the bilateral partnership between the two countries after Philippines exports were stopped earlier due to Indonesia’s non-tariff measures.
