The board of Manila Electric Co. on Monday appointed former Public Works and Highways secretary Rogelio Singson as president and chief executive officer of Meralco PowerGen Corp., the power generation arm of Meralco effective Oct. 1.
Singson will concurrently serve as a senior vice president of Meralco.
Singson is currently the president and chief executive of Light Rail Manila Corp. It is not clear whether Singson will retain his position in LMRC.
Meralco is building up to 3,000 megawatts of power generation capacity under Meralco PowerGen. Singson will replace Oscar Reyes as president of Meralco PowerGen.
“Mr. Singson can now focus on the projects of Mgen,” Meralco senior vice president and head of corporate communications Al Panlilio said.
Meralco is the country’s biggest power distributor with over six million customers in its franchise area.
Meralco PowerGen plans build additional capacities to secure future power requirements aside from owning a stake in Global Business Power Corp.
Meralco PowerGen owns the majority of Atimonan One Energy Inc., the project company of the 1,200-megawatt ultra supercritical coal plant in Atimonan, Quezon.
The project is waiting the approval of the Energy Regulatory Commission for its power supply agreement with Meralco.
The company also owns a stake in San Buenaventura Power Ltd. Co., which is constructing the 455-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Mauban, Quezon, one of the first state-of-the-art super-critical coal-fired power plants up for completion in 2019.
Meralco PowerGen owns a stake in Redondo Peninsula Energy’s 600-MW coal plant in Subic, Zambales which is also awaiting approval for its power supply agreement with Meralco.
Meralco PowerGen is also developing St. Rafael Power Generation Corp.’s 700-megawatt coal plant in Calaca, Batangas with a joint venture partner.
