San Miguel mulls over new Vietnam brewery

San Miguel Brewery Inc., the beer unit on San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc., is studying plans to spend $70 million in building a two-million hectoliter beer plant in Vietnam.

SMB chairman Ramon Ang said in an interview Tuesday following the annual stockholders’ meeting the company would start building the plant once the market study showed a good opportunity to build it.

Ang said the company has a 200-hectare property in Ho Chi Minh that could accommodate the planned new facility. The company as an existing brewery in Vietnam with annual capacity of 200,000 hectoliters.

SMB is also validating plans to build a  brewery in California.

SMB president Robert Huang said the company recently sent two officials to the US to determine if the community there would allow a brewery plant, study the market demand and finalize the capacity.

SMB in 2017 announced plans to set up a beer brewery in Los Angeles, California to cater to the growing demand for its beer products in North America.
