Work-Life Harmony is Possible

“Never get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life.”

I often hear my college friends telling each other whenever we are having a reunion, “Uy, work-life balance girrlll.” At this point of my professional life, I am very focused in reaching my goals. In this productivity-driven world, responsibility, long overtime hours, inevitable stress, sleepless nights are a given. We yearn to have that work-life harmony.  Achieving it is not that easy, but it is POSSIBLE.

Just want to share with you some of the tips I got from my boss, mom and friends. (These are consolidated)

(1) Decide to have a balance.

Weekdays are for work but weekends are for family and church. Make a wise decision in choosing your job. It must be challenging but not overwhelming and toxic. Practice time management. I am very lucky to have a boss that wants me to have a work-life balance, that is why she always tells me to be out of the office by 5:00 p.m.

(2) Be a “smart-worker” not a “hard-worker”

Rank your workload according to level of priority. Make a to-do-list and plan out your day. Don’t do everything if it is not needed. There’s always another day to do it. Unplug after the working hours. Working overtime affects the productivity of an employee so it is better to plan it accordingly.

I have a planner wherein I write all the projects for the month. I first do what is most important and I don’t let the projects overlap. There are times that I have to work overtime but I make sure I will have enough rest and energy.

(3) Do outside work activities

After office hours, I go to gym and attend dance classes. By means of this, it gets me fit, healthy, and recharged. Aside from that, I have made a lot of friends.

Our company is very supportive in terms of having a harmonious work-life. We have Zumba classes after work, running club, and every Friday, we have this stress buster activity that is very energizing and funny.

(4) Take a mini-vacation

It doesn’t have to be far and expensive. take a hike, go to the beach, have a picnic, etc. I have this “LessThan1KChallenge” whenever I have extra time, I do some mountain climbing in Rizal and go to beaches in Batangas. Sometimes, I extend my stay whenever I have work in Visayas and Mindanao and visit the tourist spots there.

The bottomline is having a harmonious life is within our hands. Just make sure that you enjoy your work, focus on your goals, and be firm with your priorities.
