San Miguel Corp. said it expects traffic to ease at South Luzon Expressway after re-opening on Sunday the third at-grade lane of Skyway and inaugurated a new, two-lane steel ramp connecting Alabang Viaduct to the elevated toll road.

The additional lanes are expected to ease traffic on South Luzon Expressway, while the construction of the Skyway Extension project is ongoing.

The additional lanes are seen to ease traffic on the South Luzon Expressway while construction of the Skyway Extension project is ongoing. Leading the inauguration ceremony are (from left) San Miguel president and chief operating officer Ramon Ang, Public Works Secretary Mark Villar, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and Muntinlupa Mayor Jaime Fresnedi.

“I know that our motorists from the south”•Muntinlupa, Las Pinas, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas”•have a hard time these past two months. Again, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this project has caused,” SMC president and COO Ramon Ang said.

“Starting today, motorists from SLEX will have up to five lanes northbound during rush hours. This is already a big improvement from just three lanes at the viaduct, before the start of construction,” he said.

The ramp is a part of preliminary works for the Skyway Extension project, a P10-billion initiative by San Miguel to ease traffic on SLEX by giving motorists access to the Skyway from Susana Heights and Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway.

The project will accommodate an additional capacity of 4,500 vehicles per hour northbound, and an 3,000 vehicles an hour southbound.

Ang said with the slated opening of the Skyway Stage 3 project from Buendia toNorth Luzon Expressway in a few months, motorists from the south would be able to take the Skyway Extension to bypass Alabang Viaduct and even Edsa.

He said with the traffic measures now in place, the construction of Skyway Extension would advance, while appealing the public for their understanding.

“To our countrymen, we are doing everything to fast-track construction and improve the traffic situation. It is a challenge, but we need to do it. We can no longer afford quick solutions, we need long-term solutions,” Ang said.

“We all deserve better, and we will work to give you better,” he said.
