Meralco offers cargo rail extension

MRAIL Inc., a unit of Manila Electric Co., has proposed to extend its cargo rail project from Manila up to Batangas port.

MRAIL said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the local government of Batangas to carry out a feasibility study on the extension of its freight train project from Calamba, Laguna to Batangas International Port.

The feasibility study will look into the alignment of tracks as well as the viability of PNR’s right-of-way.

The extension to Batangas port is part of MRAIL’s vision to interconnect the major ports in Luzon including Manila and Subic.

MRAIL has a proposal with the Philippine National Railways to operate a freight train from Tutuban to the Laguna Gateway Inland Container Terminal in Calamba and eventually to Batangas.

The project aims to provide a seamless transportation of containerized cargoes by moving them via railway instead of the roads. This will help improve traffic flow by reducing the number of cargo trucks by at least 300 to 600 daily.
