ABS-CBN delays launch of mobile business to fix support system

ABS-CBN Network Inc. has postponed the launching of its mobile business which was originally set this month to fix a problem with SIM card suppliers. ABS-CBN chief finance officer Aldrin Cerrado said the launching of the mobile business would depend on how fast it “will fix the support system,” but added it had nothing to do with its partner Globe Telecom. “We’re a little bit behind, but we are making sure that our subscribers will be happy. It’s not about Globe’s network, but more of our SIM card suppliers. So if it’s out in the market, we want to make sure to service not only Metro Manila but nationwide,” he said. ABS-CBN and Globe signed a network sharing agreement in May this year to deliver media content and offer traditional telecom services on mobile devices. The broadcast network said it would invest between P3 billion and P5 billion for the project. The National Telecommunications Commission approved the network sharing agreement between ABS-CBN and Globe in June, subject to the condition that the quality of service and service performance would not be adversely affected and the prescribed quality of service and service performance standards would be strictly observed and complied with. The mobile business, which is considered to be the “third player” in the industry, will be offered only in the Philippines.
